From Mumbai Tigers to Pune Pioneers FC: Avijit Ghosh and Ryan Roy Shah Reunite in Indian Football

Former Mumbai Tigers goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh joins Pune Pioneers FC as Goalkeeping Coach, bringing his professional playing experience and specialist coaching background to the club.

Football careers often create connections that extend beyond individual clubs and seasons. Players, coaches and football professionals cross paths in different environments, sometimes years before their professional journeys bring them together again.

The appointment of Avijit Ghosh as Goalkeeping Coach at Pune Pioneers FC brings one such connection into focus. Ghosh, a former professional goalkeeper who represented several established Indian clubs, now joins a football organisation led by Ryan Roy Shah, Founder and Club Director.

The two first crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was part of the senior squad and Shah was involved in the youth setup. More than a decade later, their football journeys have brought them together again in Pune, this time in a coaching and academy development environment.

A professional career across Indian football

Ghosh’s playing career included several clubs and competitions, beginning with appearances for Site Athletic Club, SAIL Football Club and George Telegraph.

He subsequently spent four years at Tata Football Academy between 2003 and 2007 before moving into senior professional football.

His club career included East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.

His time at East Bengal during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons included some significant team achievements. He was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He also participated in the AFC Cup in 2010 and was part of the club’s Durand Cup runners-up squad in 2009.

At Mumbai Tigers, Ghosh competed in the I-League 2nd Division, and the club also finished as Durand Cup runners-up.

He later represented Royal Wahingdoh, which finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season and as runners-up in the Shillong Premier League in 2015.

From playing career to specialist coaching

After his playing career, Ghosh transitioned into coaching, beginning in 2017.

His experience includes assignments with Hooghly District Sports Association, Kalyani Football League, Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC and George Telegraph FC.

He was also associated with SKM Sports Foundation in the AIFF U-17 Youth League in 2026.

Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and has built his coaching career around the specialist development of goalkeepers.

His experience across youth and senior football environments is an important part of the profile he brings to Pune Pioneers FC.

A new role in Pune

At Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh will oversee goalkeeper development across all age groups, covering both the residential academy in Wagholi and the club’s non-residential evening academy programme.

The appointment reflects the club’s intention to strengthen specialist coaching within its academy structure and provide dedicated attention to the goalkeeper position.

The initial response to his sessions has been encouraging. Players have responded positively, while fellow coaches have observed improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

For Ghosh, the role represents a new professional chapter after years of involvement in Kolkata football and coaching assignments across West Bengal.

His relocation from Kolkata to Pune also marks a significant personal transition, with his wife and young child remaining in Kolkata as he begins his new responsibility.

A connection renewed through football

The Mumbai Tigers association between Ghosh and Shah is a small but meaningful part of this appointment’s background. Their paths first crossed in a different phase of Indian football, when one was competing in the senior setup and the other was working within the youth structure.

Today, the connection continues in a different capacity, with Ghosh taking responsibility for the development of young goalkeepers at Pune Pioneers FC.

For the club, his appointment adds professional playing experience and specialist coaching knowledge to its academy programmes.

For Ghosh, it offers an opportunity to contribute to a new football environment and help develop players who may aspire to follow a similar path into competitive football.

In a sport built on relationships, shared experiences and long-term development, the reunion is another reminder of how football journeys can come full circle.
