A philanthropist is a person who encourages the welfare of others, especially by the charity of money to good causes. They are the ones who utilise their funds and deep-pocket assets to help and support humanitarian causes. Sometimes they fund projects, donate money, or establish foundations to make an affirmative impression on society. Their actions can help in improving education, healthcare, poverty reduction, environmental conservation, and more. There are so many well-known philanthropists around the world who actively participate in social work and take the initiatives to create lasting change which improves the lives of others. Their contributions can range from supporting local communities to making global initiatives. One such philanthropist is Dr Anil Kumar founder of ‘The Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation’ who is bringing change in society through his social works.

The Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation is working on many matters to refine the lives of underprivileged children, war widows, disabled and retired defence personnel to make them independent. They are empowering the specially-abled people by providing them self development and good job opportunities, apart from this they are helping the underprivileged children by arranging a quality education for them. The foundation also organises the samuhik vivah to support families who can not afford the expenses of marriage. During the time of the national health emergency when the whole world was facing the disastrous Covid-19, the foundation took the initiative to help the frontline workers by supplementing the public health system. Dr Anil Kumar’s foundation was also organising the rescue operations to relocate the flood victims in Bihar.

Dr Anil Kumar stated, “The foundation is working for the good and is bringing no harm to anyone, instead, it brings a smile to pale faces which yearn for the same and a glimpse of them would bring you happiness as well.” He further added “Our motive is to build an organisation, whose task is to promote and disseminate knowledge and create awareness on various health issues. We educate people on disease prevention by way of carrying on activities through various modes of communication including conducting health seminars, holding medical camps, and collaborating with other similar groups and organisations. Our experts, trainers and volunteers make sure that every marginalised citizen of the society receives the best of opportunities, which helps them in growing.”

During Novel Coronavirus, NGO Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation provided the needy with a Covid care medical. The kit consisted of an oximeter, sanitiser, digital thermometer, face mask, and other necessary medical items. Besides this, they were also serving free prescribed medicines based on doctors’ prescriptions, symptoms, and lab reports. The Foundation dispensed free food packets daily to Covid patients, migrant labourers, and their family members in Delhi with the help of Delhi Police. Volunteers of the foundation also helped out people in different states of India during the pandemic. COVID-relief ration kits encompassing atta, rice, oil, salt, red chilli powder, chana dal, turmeric powder, sugar, & other vital food items were distributed to communities, who were at risk of survival.

In collaboration with Jivodaya Hospital, the NGO also arranges medical camps at different parts of Delhi like Jahangirpuri, J J colony, Wazirpur, Azadur etc, to provide free health checkups and Medical care to the society. The main objective of the free medical camps is to bring awareness amongst the deprived population of the country who have no access to basic healthcare services or knowledge about the diseases they are suffering from. So, The foundation provides services in medical camps, free medical advice, and medicine to unfortunate people, and refers them for specialised treatment or surgery whenever it is required. These camps make sure people are getting the healthcare at the right time and seeing the doctor early enough before a small health problem turns serious.
